Unicorn Tales
Episode 1
In this all-new, limited behind-the-scenes series of interviews, magicians Bizzaro and Misty Lee dish on the origins of the weekly magic show Unicorn Wednesday, how they came up with the idea for Week 65’s trick, where they go to get their REAL magic supplies, how they do Unicorn Wednesdays, and why Misty needs an intervention (Spoiler Alert: She has problems).

I agree with your comments about building a narrative for an illusion. What I love about the Unicorn Wednesday tricks is that the narrative is relevant, builds interest in the upcoming illusion, entertains, and is just long enough without getting tedious.
I find it frustrating when a magician has a trick with a very long, confusing introduction and delivery that does not have entertaining moments such as mini-tricks or entertaining humor to keep the audience engaged instead of how some magicians cram a lot of misdirection and self adulation into the introduction and after the final reveal of the trick, the audience has to think back over the previous eight minutes to figure out what the trick was and that is not satisfying, sort of like a very long run-on sentence that requires reading three times and diagramming to understand; the magician thinks they are clever, but many people in the audience go away thinking the magician is a waste of time in that the 90 minute show had 17 minutes of actual content.

I’m so excited that I stumbled upon this marvelous miraculous fantasmagorium by way of crazy random happenstance, like ya do. So, I’m 36, have a bunch of health issues, and one of them had be bedridden for a good 13 months-back injuries: historically not awesome, and yup, totally bedridden from July 2018-August 2020-and decided to stay sane and not lose my mind I should learn something. And I stumbled into the beauty of card magic entirely by accident! And since I learned about magic during the longest 50 years aka 2020, I didn’t have a way to learn except by my favorite way… BOOKS! But that also means I’m entirely naive when it comes to names I SHOULD know, so I’ve been reading and using online tutorials to help because card magic, not great to learn whilst in the supine position. So yeah, lots of observing and attempting to absorb, but it wasn’t until 2021 I started note taking, and thinking that, hey, maybe my brief history in comedy improv, and being a creative writer, and always wanting to learn but never thinking I was smart enough to learn magic, and also never seeing any women was really annoying, so I said, ok, time to learn. And then I wanted to support independent magic shops/business, and found on Instagram the Magic Apple, and was just watching a magic live Wednesday, that I just found out about today, and was recorded not today, but had Misty on! And I said, I know that awesome face! I saw her when I looked up the magic castle! So yeah, I’m watching the fantastic Misty Lee on Instagram, when I heard about this? Stopped, and immediately went to this website. So while I’m a much older novice at 36, I look young because I too have stayed out of the sun, and yes, it does keep you looking young (and moisturizer! Also the blood of…. whoops, I mean? Uh, moisturizer, yup, only lotion. Because I’m not a vampire? What! That’s insane! No you’re crazy! But I digress….)
I’m so happy that I found this by accident because I’m still learning and no where near knowing what my character would be, but I do know that it cheers up the other patients when I have to wait for an appointment? So anytime you can make someone smile is a good time, since I’m a hardcore believer in practicing random acts of kindness. And if I were a vampire, I’d be a lousy one since I’m a vegetarian human? So yeah, I’d starve SUPER fast. But I was born on Halloween, so? Yeah no that’s just a random digression again.
Basically: thank you!!! Books are fantastic, as are purchased tutorials from theory11 and Penguin Magic, but seeing why this was created, and getting to see someone’s true identity come out and show online versus what was apparently beautiful but not necessarily genuine, even though I doubt it was anything but amazing! Still, any chance to learn from people who are my age, and have the same years under their belt only with actual magical experience as well, yeah, I don’t know how I missed the buss on magic as a kid? I was writing in my journal and playing sports (I’m a bit of a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside a conundrum, only not Russia, since I’m pretty sure that quote was Churchill talking about Russia… maybe my character could just be “digression girl”, could that be a thing? Man I hope so, otherwise I need to be less loquacious and more concise, laconic even, which I once was… but I was anesthetized at the time?)
Basically this was amazing to listen to, hear about how an idea can grow… clearly by planting seeds and waiting for the shower to let them grow! But I’m just thrilled that you all created this and, no that’s it. This is amazing and thank you Apple Magic and thank you Misty Lee for “dropping” by their Instagram live magic talks because it brought me here… which reminds me, I need to finish watching your interview over there, on Instagram… wow, the internet is weird. Anyway. Thank you for being another magical voice and for being so incredibly well rounded!!! Is there anything you can’t do amazingly well? So I’m going back there, and then will likely come back here to start learning and watching. And also, what a beautiful reason to create something. And thank you for being the type of magicians I aspire to be… well, huh, I guess when I’m 60 I’ll have hopefully learned enough to finally be able to perform? Sure that’ll be SUPER easy to do… I wish I had a TARDIS so I could go back in time, drop off “expert at the card table” and “royal road to card magic” and a kid’s magic set to my 5 year old self who still would have wanted to be Indiana Jones, but with MAGIC! So really my only comment is:
Thank you. Truly. For showing us all that yeah, viral is great, if you’re a virus. But if you’re a human? Not something you WANT, it might happen. But learning and learning it right, is always the way to go, without agenda, just an open mind and heart (though not literally because that would not end well.)
So thank you. Truly and with no jokes this time. I’m looking forward to watching and learning, well, once I’ve read some more (I’ve got A LOT of book learning to catch up on… thankfully I’m a bibliophile, so happy to be surrounded by books, now if only I were an actual witch who could borrow Hermione’ as time turner so I had a bit more time to read and learn while still being able to get to my physical therapy sessions… now if only I had a TARDIS, then I’d be totally covered!)
